2011 “Go Green” Challenge

2011 “Green” World Challenge:  Save Water and Energy

“We did not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”  – Ancient Indian Quote

2011 “Go Green” Challenge

Following our proven energy & water saving ideas will help Americans save money and preserve the planet’s natural, fresh water sources and energy/oil use.

If 10% of Americans took the 2011 “Go Green” Challenge, we would save at least:

  • 58 – 75 Billion – Amount of Gallons of water we would save every year!
  • $1.5 – 4.6 Billion – Amount of water cost savings
  • 92 Billion – Amount of kWh saved/year
  • 135.6 Million – Amount of Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions Saved/Year
  • $6 – 7 Billion – Amount of energy cost savings

Do your part, “Go Green” and preserve our planet for future generations.

How do you save water and energy?

How to save water:

  • Invest in low-flow items or aerators (water-reducing devices – they are cheap) for:  faucets, shower-heads, toilets.
  • Turn shower off (or lower) when scrubbing your body with soap. If you do this every time you take a shower and you take an average of 1.25 showers/day you will save an estimated 1,003.74 gallons/year (2.2gpm flow rate * 1.25*365)! If 10% of America (30.8 million people) committed to this challenge we would save about 31 Billion Gallons every year!
  • Do not flush the toilet after you pee; wait 1 or 3 other times; this will save an estimated 803 – 2409 gallons/year.  If 10% of America committed to this challenge we would save 24.7 – 74.2 Billion Gallons of Water every year!
  • Combined water challenges would save $50-150/year for a combined total of $1.5 – 4.6 Billion in water cost savings!

“How to save Energy”:

  • Purchase Energy Star rated equipment.  www.EnergyStar.gov
  • Turn “Off” – Air Conditioning (AC), and unplug appliances.  This could save 10% of your electric bill/year or $6.34 billion U.S. dollars
  • Use Energy Efficient light bulbs – they use less energy, last longer, have the same or better light output, and contain less mercury content vs. older bulbs (incandescents).
  • Turn off equipment and unplug items not in use – this is a “Phantom” steeler of electricity
  • Turn OFF your computer/Power Strip before you leave work/home
  • Turn A/C OFF/up/down when you leave to save energy

Buildings account for:

  • 1/6 of the world’s freshwater withdrawals;
  • 1/4 of its wood harvest
  • 2/5 of its material and energy flows
